For additional information on the ORIX Foundation see www.orixfoundation.org.

_______________________________________

Philanthropy - How Many Think It Is Important
By Isko Roberts

Ask anybody this question and I guarantee you that you will hear everyone agree that it is very important. You will hear sermons about how if all the people who are well off give something back, then the world would be a much better place. If you were to ask yourself the question and follow that question up with what was your latest contribution to society, I’m betting you like me will end up searching quite a bit.

This is why it is important to appreciate and honor people that serve and enrich people either monetarily or by actions, be it volunteering or performing a well intentional service that will in turn improve and enlighten the lives around us. It is because of these people that there is hope for a million people down on their luck.

In my line of work I’ve had the opportunity of meeting many that have actively worked to serve the community without any expectation. I met one such person today, Jim Thompson. Jim Thompson is the CEO of ORIX and in addition to his hectic work schedule, works tirelessly for a number of charitable organizations.

I will follow up this post with a list of charitable organizations that are looking for support from all of us. I hope we find it within ourselves to lend a hand.

Update: While I will publish a list of charities as promised, here are some additional details of some of the charities that ORIX as a company supports. Infact they have a seperate organization called ORIX Foundation in which Jim Thompson, ORIX Foundation board member is part of and helps guide the vision and mission of the foundation.

Senior Monitoring System (alias Granny Cam) - Technology Helps the Elderly Age in Place

Vicky lost her mother a few months ago and while that was difficult, the real hardship is just now really hitting ---- that's trying to care for her disabled father when she lives four hours away. With her dad unable to speak due to a stroke, the phone doesn't do her much good. That's why she began the tenacious search for "what's out there." She said, "I just knew there had to be some kind of technology that would help me stay in touch with Dad. So I searched on the Internet and found Tender Tidings Seniors, a senior monitoring service that is reasonably priced that will help me keep my dad in his own home rather than putting him in a nursing home."

Tender Tidings Seniors works with remote video monitoring to keep families connected. The adult child signs up at www.TenderTidingsSeniors.com and orders the high-quality internet camera to install in the elderly parent's home. Then the caregiving child can monitor her father or mother by watching streaming video on her computer --- no matter how far away she lives.

The wireless "Granny Cam" can be placed in any room of the home, and the caregiver can assign accounts to siblings who would also like to stay connected to the aging parent. She can also choose "Video with Sound" if she wants to hear what's going on in the home.

Vicky spends a good deal of her time arranging for outside caregivers to come to her father's home, but she's never sure if they come or not. With the senior monitoring system, she can check at their designated times to see if they've arrived or not. Vicky says the granny cam is the kind of technology that will make her life easier and will give her dad a better quality of life by allowing him more time at home.

Technology can work for us as we deal with the aging process. A senior monitoring system using a remote video stream is one answer.

Proposed bill would have allowed families to put cameras in nursing home rooms of relatives for monitoring care and treatment
JAMES JEFFERSON
Associated Press
Updated: 02-6-2009 1:11 pm
LITTLE ROCK (AP) - A bill to allow families to put cameras in the nursing home rooms of relatives, to monitor their care and treatment, has ran into opposition from the nursing home industry in a House committee. Opponents argued that the bill, as written, would force nursing home operators to violate other patients' privacy rights that are guaranteed under federal law.
After a marathon afternoon hearing Tuesday, the sponsor pulled the proposed Willie Mae Ryan Act, known as the "granny cam" bill, from consideration before the House Public Health, Welfare and Labor Committee.
"Would you please provide me the language that would make this bill acceptable, that would make nursing home residents have the right to have a camera in their room? I would accept that language," an obviously frustrated Rep. Stephen Bright, R-Maumelle, challenged the industry after nearly three hours of testimony and questions.
Randy Wyatt, director of the Arkansas Health Care Association, and other association officials were noncommittal. They were clear in what they saw wrong with the bill but had no immediate suggestions in how Bright could allay their concerns.
"Cameras in the nursing homes is not what we're opposed to," past AHCA President Jim Cooper of Melbourne said. "We're charged with protecting the rights and dignity of all our patients.
"The way this bill is written, it's impossible to protect the right to privacy of a patient that lives three doors down the hall or across the hall who comes in to visit a patient in a certain room."
The bill will remain on the committee's agenda and could be brought up again.
Bright's bill would place cameras in the rooms of nursing home residents at the discretion of family members who may have an interest in watching how their relatives are being cared for at facilities across the state. The monitoring device would be supplied by the family and would not infringe on the privacy of any roommates of those being watched.
Efforts to pass similar legislation failed in 2001 and 2003, but Bright had hoped that the story of Ryan, an 81-year-old with Alzheimer's disease who was beaten to death at the Dallas County Nursing Home in Fordyce in 2003 would provide inspire support among lawmakers this year.
Ryan's daughter, Gloria Leveritt of Morrilton, implored committee members to consider her mother's case and what can happen in a nursing home to defenseless patients. An in-room camera could provide a measure of protection, she said.
"Cameras, they're not for everbody. It's for your family, your benefit, for people who can't help themselves. They need someone to watch over them," she said.
The bill would authorize monitoring devices to be placed in individual rooms to record audio, video or both. Videos would have date and time stamps. The facilities would install and monitor devices paid for by the consenting residents or their families, and placement would require consent from a roommate.
Nursing home operators also criticized a part of the bill that would prevent nursing homes from denying admission to people on the basis of their requests for a monitoring device.

What do you think? Visit www.TenderTidings.com for more information on Granny-Cams

Can a Nanny Cam Help Recession Proof Your Home?

A few weeks ago as I was watching CNN, I listened as a man explained that home invasions had risen since the recession. He commented that thieves are certainly NOT without jobs these days, but rather are more motivated than ever to break into our homes and take whatever they can use or sell. One of his solutions? A nanny cam. He mentioned that you could get double duty with your nanny cam by using it to monitor your children during the day and reposition it at your doorway in the evenings, when most home invasions occur.

Not only can the remote video monitoring devices capture the identity of anyone who might enter your home, but even better, you can discourage uninvited guests from even thinking about entering your home when you have the sticker displayed that says "video monitoring in progress." Of course, the goal is to deter these criminals altogether. We want to protect our possessions, but more than that, we want to protect our families.

Tender Tidings chose to use the Axis 207w as their nanny cam because of its exceptional picture quality. Unlike other store security cameras I've seen on TV where it was almost impossible to identify a person, this camera captures an excellent image. To see an example, go to www.TenderTidings.com and click on "demo" and then "live camera demo."

Working moms and dads who use remote video monitoring systems for child monitoring can also use their nanny cams for home security purposes. However, hopefully, you'll never need to identify an uninvited guest.

An Easy Lesson Model for Nannies as Teachers

As a 30+ year veteran public school teacher, I can say for certain that kindergarten is five years too late to begin educating a child. Parents, grandparents, big brothers and sisters, nannies, and other caregivers often determine the academic success of a child by how they interact with him or her early in life. So, if these caregivers are teachers, why not teach them how to teach?

Here’s a simple model for teaching anything to almost anyone. It’s called the 5E Model of Instruction and many teachers around the world use this model in formal lessons every day. It can just as easily help nannies, moms, and other caregivers feel secure in their teaching approach.

Engage: For example, ask a question, point to something of interest, or give the child something play with that you’ll talk about later. Generate curiosity about something.

Explore: Let the child see, feel, hear, taste (if appropriate), and smell an object. Give him time to get to know it.

Explain: Talk about it with the child. You explain what you want him to notice. Let him explain to you what he has learned about it.

Elaborate: Encourage the child to use what she’s learned and apply it to new situations. For example, if she learned that an apple is red, let her point to other red things in the house.

Evaluate: Give the child opportunities to show what he’s learned. For example, put several toys out and have him play the “red” game by choosing the red objects and placing them in a basket. It won’t take long to find out if the child really understands the color “red.”

Working moms and working dads, talk to your nanny and let her know that you want her to actively teach your child age appropriate concepts. With the 5E Model of Instruction, she can adapt almost any lesson to a child of almost any age. If you use the Tender Tidings Infant/Toddler reporting page that comes with a Tender Tidings subscription, there’s a place on the form for Nanny to document what she taught your child each day. What a great way to give your child a firm educational foundation.

Go to www.TenderTidings.com and see all the wonderful features that help working parents stay connected to their at-home children. Working moms and dads don’t have to feel separated from their kiddos any longer.

It’s funny how you never hear certain terms until they become a part of your life. Like the term “caregiver.” Such a simple term. I’m sure it was out there, floating around in space, being used by millions of people, but until I became one, I just didn’t notice it.

About two years ago we moved my husband’s mother to a little house around the corner from us. We knew her dementia would mean she’d need more help, but we really didn’t have a clue what to expect. A little research on the Internet and we knew that’s what we had become --- caregivers. And we found those millions of people who already embodied the essence of the term. We were not alone.

We are Baby Boomers. We are certainly not alone, and many of us are “Caregiver” tagged now. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. Caregiving can be very rewarding, but when it’s new, it’s scary.

Just this week we received an article I thought interesting and helpful to caregivers, so I’d like to pass it on. It is called, "50 Communication Tips and Techniques for Caregivers" (http://www.rncentral.com/nursing-library/careplans/50_communication_tips_for_caregivers <http://www.rncentral.com/nursing-library/careplans/50_communication_tips_for_caregivers> ).

Check it out. I bet you’ll get some good ideas if you, too, are a caregiver.

Oh, and if you work or live away from your loved one, you may want to consider subscribing to www.TenderTidings.com or www.TenderTidingsSeniors.com.

The first is a child monitoring system for working moms and dads who have children at home they want to watch by videostream through the Internet. The second is a senior monitoring system for those of us with elderly parents. Remote video monitoring systems can make all the difference for caregivers and for the ones they love. When you can both see and hear your loved one at the click of a mouse, you become a better caregiver just because you are staying better connected.

Hmmm. Caregiver. Couldn’t get along without that word now.

Implementing child monitoring software can basically act as a senior monitoring system on your computer with you as the administrator. You can also consider remote video monitoring as an extra precaution to ensure the safety of your children.

With Apple, child monitoring software serves its purpose, while being both child and parent friendly. Apple has SeeMore's Safety Browser which focuses on the parents number one concern of "stranger safety". With this software, parents can be rest assured that their children will have a stranger-free safe web-browsing and internet experience. How does it work? Once the browser is installed and activated, the parent makes the decisions about which websites are most appropriate for your child to view. No amount of clicks can lead your child out of the internet safety zone. This child monitoring software is essentially made with the child in mind.

The increasing use of remote video monitoring

As responsible parents, we all want to know our children are safe. Due to the many reported cases of child abuse at the hands of babysitters, cleaning services stealing money from homes they are cleaning, and for the monitoring of babies in their cribs, the use of remote video monitoring equipment has become very popular. This has only become possible in recent years due to the technological advances in remote video monitoring and many people are taking advantage of this technology to ensure the safety of their children and homes. If you are using a babysitter, it is a very good idea to use child monitoring software for the safety of your children. Another popular use for child monitoring software is to keep a eye on a baby in their crib. This child monitoring software brings the parents peace of mind and alerts them to possible problems. Crime is another reason for remote video monitoring. The remote video monitoring equipment is used by homeowners and companies to alert them to intruders and employees who are stealing from the company. These are just a few examples where this new technology is in use.

It's a way to stay connected to the child even when the parents have to be away.

It seems to us that a child monitoring system like Tender Tidings would be particularly helpful to parents of special needs children. Is there?

This service not only offers safe, password-protected videostream, but there’s also a shareable family calendar and tools for communicating with the child’s caregiver.
<img src="http://www.moguling.com/controls/oboutSuite/Editor/Editor_data/ed_icons/emoticons/thumb_up.gif" / alt="senior monitoring system, child monitoring software"> Using a video monitoring system to keep watch over the very young and the very old is a good way insure that they are safe and secure. Some people use child monitoring software to make sure that their baby sitters or nannys are treating them well, and the kids are not being mistreated or abused. Likewise, a senior monitoring system can allow an older person to stay in their home longer, which can be more comfortable for them than living in an assisted living facility.

Many of the monitoring systems use wireless communication signals, so there is no worry if the power goes out or the phone line is cut. Some of the senior monitoring system providers give the seniors a pendant or wrist band to wear, so if they fall, they will be able to alert the monitoring center, who will call the appropriate family, friends, or agency to help the person. Falling is the number one cause of injuries to senior citizens, so making sure that they are able to access help wherever they land is one major reason to equip them with such a monitoring system.

We have all laughed at the "I've fallen and can"t get up" line. But It was no joke for my elderly aunt. Naturally she lives alone and fortunately I insisted she get a senior monitoring system for my peace of mind.
She lives in a house that only has four steps leading down to the laundry room. While making her way down with a load of laundry, one piece feel to the floor and she tripped over it and landed on her butt.

At first she thought she was alright but soon discovered she couldn't stand up. We had neglected to put a phone in this room as she said she could have scooted over to it and called me for help. She had gotten in the habit of wearing her senior monitoring system every day so she was able to get help but they had to break in her door to get to her. She wasn't very happy about that issue but I reminded her she could have been down for hours if she hadn't used the senior monitoring system. She said they were very helpful and friendly, responded immediately and had an excellent follow up procedure.

We chose AlertOne for our senior monitoring system but there are several good ones out there. It is definitely worth your time and effort to look into a system for your loved one.
